Compare And Contrast The Conflict Between Ali And Shiites

The conflict between these two Muslim branches began 1400 years ago at 632 A.D. when Prophet Muhammad passed away. Because Muhammad had no definite successor, his followers disputed over the next leader. The Sunnis believe in a vote to choose the next leader so they chose Abu Bakr who was a close friend and advisor of Muhammad. The Shiites on the other hand, believe that leadership comes through ancestry and preferred Muhammad’s son-in-law, Ali, to rule. Abu Bakr became the first caliph much to the Shiites’ disappointment and continued to rule until he was later assasinated. Later, Umar and Uthman became the second and third sucessors but also assasinated before Ali was made caliph. After appoximately six years of ruling, Ali was assasinated
