John Allen Muhammad vs. Nidal Malik Hasan Nidal Malik Hasan was born in Arlington County. Hasan was raised primarily in Virginia. He graduated from William Fleming High School and attended Virginia Tech. Hasan graduated from Virginia Tech School in 1995. From there, he enlisted himself in the army.
After the death of Muhammad in 632 CE, a rift occurred within the Islamic community. There was a vacancy for leadership and a question of who was qualified to fill it. At that time the companions of the Prophet were elected to be central leaders and were known as Caliphs. The way in which Caliphs were elected, and who succeeded them, is where the difference between Sunni and Shia begins.

One major event from the Righly Guided Caliphs through the Umayyad and Abbasid period was leadership over the Muslim community, which resulted in the crisis of succession. Due to the sucession, it created another major event. This event lead the development of the two major branches of Islam: Sunni and Shi 'a. Muslim rule spread through out North Africa and Central Asia, this lead to claims that caliphs discriminated against non-Arab Muslims. This claim lead to a Battle of Camel. This is a major event because it was the first battle to have Muslim against Muslim.
Making up nearly one third of the Abrahamic Faiths, Islam is practiced worldwide amongst a vast populous. Many people who do not practice Islam believe that all Islamic followers are the same; but as I conducted research to identify the distinctness between the main two types of Islam, Sunni and Shia, I can conclude that there are, in fact, differences and similarities between the two. Roughly 85% of Muslims are Sunni, and 15% are Shia; Sunni Muslims believed that Abu Bakr should be the first caliph, whereas Shia Muslims believed that Ali was the rightful heir to Islamic leadership. There was a split in Islam because the Sunni and Shia believed differently on who Muhammad’s successor was. The Sunni believed that Muhammad’s successor was Abu Bakr, which is the father in law of Muhammad. But the Shia believed that Ali ibn Abi Talib was Muhammad’s successor, which was his soninlaw. This caused a debate between the Sunni and Shia and later on caused the split in Islam.
After the Prophet (P) passed away there was confusion and chaos regarding the actual death of the Prophet, as well as who would be his successor. Because of the Prophet’s death, many tribes rebelled and refused to pay Zakat, because they believed it was only for the Prophet (P). There also had been a large number of frauds claiming to be prophets and through this more uprisings came about. This also caused the Persian and Easter Roman empires to threaten the new-born Islamic state at Medina. Abu Bakr, the first chosen Caliph, had to deal with these problems before he could truly begin his reign.

After the Muhammad died in 632, the Muslim society had to face a crisis to choose their leader because Muhammad didn’t choose an inheritor or taught his supporters how to select it. The Abu Bakr had voted as a leader of the Muslim society. He was a faithful companion of Muhammad. In 632, Abu-Bakr was elected as the first caliph of Islam.

With currently 7.1 billion people living in the world, fighting is inevitable. Solving problems through violence has been happening since the beginning of humans and will continue on as long as humans continue to exist. Continuing this basic trend is a conflict going on in the Middle East between the Sunnis and Shiites. With 87% of the muslim religion being Sunni and the other 13% being Shiites one group is going to feel more oppressed.
Shi’ites believed that Prophet Mohammed should have been succeeded by his son-in-law, Imam Ali, they also believed that leadership of the Muslim world should pass through the prophet’s descendants. Sunnis on the other hand didn’t believe the leadership had to pass through hereditary succession. Sunni’s are committed to the faith and practices established by Mohammad and the four “rightly guided caliphs” who were the first four successors. The division between Sunni and Shia is dated way back to the death of the prophet Muhammad when his followers were faced with the dispute of who would be his successor as the leader of the Muslim people. Shiites are those who followed Ali, the closest relative of Muhammad, and believe him to be as Muhammad's successor. The Shi'ites believe that shortly before his death, the Prophet Muhammad nominated his cousin and son in law Ali publicly, to be his successor. According to Shi'ites, in opposite to what the wishes of the Prophet were, the community came under the leadership of three of his Muhammad's companions.
