The first thing I think about when I heard the so called “American dream”, is in the people/immigrants that came to the United States in search of better opportunities to achieve more wealth of which they might have in their native lands. They leave everything behind for this dream: in some cases, family, country, customs. They go away in search of better opportunities, only to find a good employment that pays the sufficient money to be able to pay the debts that they surely left in their homes. But the saddest part is that is not as easy as it sounds, they end up working in poorly paid or dangerous jobs, if they find any work at all.
Another article called Envy and the American Dream by Nitin Nohria summarizes how no matter what Americans go through to have this extraordinary dream we will still stick together as a whole. In sum, America is starting to focus more on what others think then on their own opinion.
The American Dream begins with an affordable living arrangement and a good job, but with remorse, these two pieces are not connecting (Thompson, 2014). A college graduate can expect expensive housing with a job not reflective of the high housing price. In an article published in The Atlantic, “Why it’s So Hard for Millennials to Find a Place to Live and Work” Derek Thompson talks about the inequality between upward mobility and the housing market. For example, Dayton has one of the most affordable housing markets in the United States, however unlike California there is no social mobility (Thompson, 2014). The American dream is different for everyone and changes the course of action an individual may take.
The most common and typical American Dream is the dream of being super successful and wealthy. It’s been a common belief for many years that when you come to America you can get rich very easily and do anything you want. Even though most people have a lot better opportunities in America then their home countries, getting rich and famous is still pretty challenging for most people. Their are a few people that actually became rich and famous from coming to America, but its very few compared to those who don’t become rich and famous. Most people who come to the U.S. do not become rich but they do become more wealthy then they were in their home countries because of how poor some of the other countries are compared to America.
