The giver society and today are similar and different. The giver is uniform, routine, planned out, and all the same. The giver society and today are very different in some ways and similar in others. In a world where color and emotion dont exist. The main character jonas, a 17yr old boy has a gift. The biggest similarities and differences between the two are the future and past, individualism, and death.

Future and past. In the giver, the citizens have no memory of the past, or the word/life apart from theirs. In some ways, people do live like this now. They are only living for the moment. It's up to you what you decide. Never once thinking about their life ahead or the past. In the giver, a quote that I found fitting was “ I don't know what you mean when you say ‘the whole world’ or ‘generations before him’. I thought there was only us. I thought there was only now.” pg 77-78. This quote means that society is clueless of any sort of past .In today's world, culture, heritage, and art are very dear to today's society. in the giver, You are told what to wear, what to say, what your job is, even down to what you eat and feel. You have no emotion. No feeling. No light. This quote from the book states “he knew there was no quick comfort for emotions like those. They were deeper and they did not need to be told. They were felt” to me, this quote shows that the little to no emotion they had, they were told and not felt. The complete opposite of today. Emotions are felt, they are burdened, and they are loved and cherished. Part of being a human is feeling.a huge part of today’s society. What you look like, feel like, and respond to conflict is all up to you in today’s world. In the giver, things are not so free.
