We all have that favorite song we like to play at full blast. Music is very therapeutic and it comes in different genres like the following: Pop, Hip-Hop/Rap, Heavy Metal/Rock, and Country. There seems to be a song for every emotion and everybody. It doesn’t matter what genre you prefer because music always comes down to one’s personality. A song can describe someone better than they can describe themselves. Pop music is a favorite genre of mine. I could listen to it for hours at a time. Most popular music can be described as perky, fun, and simple songs you hear on the radio. If popular music was a person they would be described as an extrovert. They are social butterflies who can get along with anyone. No matter how annoying they get they are always loved. Professor North and Hargreaves of Heriot-Watt University conducted a study on 36,000 people in 60 countries about the relationship between music and personality. He describes pop music fans as people who “have a high self-esteem, are hardworking, outgoing and gentle, but are not creative and not at ease” (North). This partially describes my personality, since I tend to switch back and forth between Pop and Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop and rap has played a major role in my childhood. I’m more a low energy person and rock doesn’t seem to be my cup of tea. After years of listening to this genre in my friend’s car, I’ve came to the conclusion of this personality. Heavy metal and Rock fans seem to be very emotional whether it is angry or depressed. They also give off a reckless vibe. Referring back to North and Hargreaves’ study, they see these fans as people who “have a low self-esteem, are creative, not hard-working, not outgoing, gentle, and at ease” (North).
