If you had to choose between someone who focuses on learning practical skills and being independent, or someone who would fight for education,civil rights and political changes, who would you choose? In this debate, W.E.B. Dubois is having a conversation with his rival, Booker T. Washington. W.E.B. DuBois proposes the idea of a higher level of education and how people should have their voices heard. Whilst Booker T. wants to keep our mouths shut, do what the system tells us to do, be hard independent workers and overall be good civilians. W.E.B. Dubois's approach is the most effective way to achieve equality and freedom. His ideas are superior. W.E.B. Here, W.E.B. says that a house won't have any value if there is no fairness or respect for the system. W.E.B. replies with this to show that if we don't become activists, we will be left worthless and powerless. W.E.B.’s idea is more effective because he believes a higher level of education is more reliable than starting working. “Charles and miss can look for another place for a hand or cook, some men rejoice in skill at hand and some in cultivating land, but there are others who maintain the right to cultivate the brain”(lines 11-16). W.E.B. prioritizes education over many things. W.E.B. believes education can go way farther than cultivating land. He would much rather keep following education than anything else.
