When it comes to mobile application development and selling mobile applications, it is undeniable that the two major players in terms of marketplaces are Apple’s App Store and Google’s Google Play Store. The App Store is the marketplace that is available to all of Apple’s users who are using iOS devices (Yale). The App Store is available on a variety of mobile devices made by Apple including the iPhone, the iPad, and the iPod (Apple). The Google Play Store is found on the majority of up-to-date Android devices (Yale) including Google’s own Nexus devices among others (Google). However, this is not the reality. As of June 9, 2014 Google Play had 1,239,315 applications ready to be downloaded. At the same time, the App Store had approximately 1.2 million applications (Yale). Even though the two had roughly the same number of apps, Google Play had about 60 percent more downloads than the App Store in the third quarter of 2014 which is up from the third quarter of 2013 which was only 25 percent higher than iOS (Mathew). Downloads in Google Play are still rising faster than the App Store’s downloads (Yale). Developing markets around the world have been a major factor in Google Play’s continued download growth. Brazil’s share of downloads has increased more than any other country in the third quarter of 2014. It is followed by India and Indonesia. New markets are also growing within the Google Play Store and driving the massive download count. One of these markets is messaging applications; messaging applications are massive market on both Google Play and the App Store. Facebook Messenger is the most downloaded application on both platforms
