Edgar Allan Poe’s life and works share several striking similarities. Edgar Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. There were many disappointments in his life. For example Elizabeth Poe died in 1811, when Edgar was 2 years old. She had separated from her husband and had taken her three kids with her. Henry went to live with his grandparents while Edgar was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. John Allan and Rosalie was taken in by another family. His life was a tragedy in his early years. Poe joined the army after he was kicked out of school. He was kicked out because he wasn’t able to afford his school. His father wouldn’t pay for the full tuition of his school which led Poe to leaving and join the army. The army is when Poe started writing. He started to write books and then he published them, but he never made a lot of money of of them. …show more content…

Edgar went to Boston and joined the U.S. army when he was 18 in 1827. He obtained the rank of sergeant major. His mother also died while he was in the army, she died in 1829. Edgar Allan Poe was attending to West Point until he purposely broke the rules and ignored his duties so he would be dismissed. He did this because he wanted to spend more time writing.

In 1831, Edgar Allan Poe went to New York City where he had some of his poetry published. “He submitted stories to a number of magazines and they were all rejected” (poestories). No one was really interested in his stories. Poe also asked his John Allan for help, but John decided not to help. After while John Allan died in 1834, he left nothing in his will for Edgar. But soon after, in 1835, “Edgar got a job as an editor of a newspaper because of a contest he won with his story, The Manuscript Found in a Bottle” (poestories).
