Composition And Rhetoric: What Makes A College Freshman

College is not for all students. Some students’ main goal is to graduate high school and never set foot in another classroom. Other students decide to start college because that is what everyone else is doing, but then realize they do not have the motivation to stay. I consider myself to be in the last category. I am one of the students who believes that I need a quality college education to attain a successful career. Therefore, my reasoning for taking this class is that it is a requirement, to challenge myself, and I expect to advance my writing techniques. Composition and Rhetoric is one of the basic required classes for college freshmen. This is the main reason most of us are in this class. My favorite aspect of literature is textual analysis. Many of my previous literature assignments have consisted of analyzing a text and forming an essay about the symbolism presented by the author. In my opinion, analyzing a literary work is one of the most important aspects of literature. The whole reason an author writes a work is for the reader to understand the message being expressed. The underlying message can be written directly to the reader, but mostly the message is found by analyzing the symbolism the writer has developed. Analyzing text and understanding the writer’s message for an essay assignment is the type of work that I enjoy in English and literature. This is one of the reasons that I decided to take English and Rhetoric at West Georgia Tech. While it is a required course, it was my decision to step up and take a college class. It may have been easier to take a high school English class, graduate, and be done. Instead, I would rather be in a course that will prepare me for the rest of my college career. I expect Mr. Taylor to challenge my writing skills in this course. Challenge and hard work is the only way to learn and understand new techniques.
