“41 States do not require sex education to be medically accurate”according to Christopher Marinelli, written in an article in University wire called Lack of Sex Education in the United States (Marinelli). Sex education is taught all over the united states, but only 12 states require mandatory sex education. The standard view of most parents is that abstinence-based sex education is the best program to protect their student’s innocence; however, comprehensive sex education is more effective and informative to best enlighten students and include all non traditional sexual differences. Students agree that with abstinence only sex education they do not feel informed or prepared for later in life. I am not saying that abstinence sex education does not work because for example Mixon spoke to an abstinence sex education teacher, and wrote that he had a student that wrote him a note saying “ she planned to have sex the night of her 16th birthday but was rethinking after hearing Bailey speak” (Mixon). Abstinence only sex education support argue that teenagers don't need this information until they are adults but according to Castner “46 percent of males and 33 percent of females do not receive any sexual education before the first time they have intercourse”(Castner). This means that almost half of the worlds males and a third of the worlds females did not learn essential sex education putting themselves in danger of receiving a std,sti and the possibility of getting pregnant if not properly protected. Abstinence only sex education has been proven to have an effect on some students and postponed intercourse plans until later, but abstinence only sex education limits the amount of students that receive safe sex education that relates to them currently. It lacks providing information about safe sex to students who are already having sex and don’t know how to be safe. According to Mixon over 50% of high school students are sexually active.
