Have you ever felt neglected by your parents in their decisions? Well, these characters have felt that way too. The two fictional novels, Confetti Girl by Diana Lopez and Tortilla Sun by Jennifer Cervantes, both of the novels create tension between the main character and parent. In Confetti Girl, the narrator talks to her dad about school and tries to make conversation, but once the narrator brings up a new book she read, her dad goes on a scavenger hunt to find his copy and doesn’t pay attention to his daughter. This caused tension between the both of them, making them feel separated from each other. In Tortilla Sun, Izzy finds out that her mom is moving to Costa Rica to finish research over the summer. According to the author, Diana Lopez, in her novel, she shares, “I guess these projects were chores, but they were fun, too. Now when I come home, I’ve got to sweep, fold towels, or scrub the bathroom sink. Dad helps, but sometimes he makes a big mess” (2). The author shares how the narrator transitioned from doing “chores” to doing real chores. This also means that when the narrator's mom was around, they always did fun projects as her chores, but now that things are different, she has to do real chores like sweeping the floor and doing grunt work. This is important because it shows how the narrator had a closer and more fun relationship with her mom and now she is having trouble connecting and staying close with her remaining parent. In paragraph 17, the author reports, “‘I don’t remember, Dad. It could have been super-duper or super-loop for all I care’” (Lopez). The novel shares how the narrator became a little sarcastic when she was talking to her dad. In other words, she changed how she was talking to her dad in this part of the novel. This is important because it shows that the tone in the passage changed, giving off a sarcastic tone. This also represents how the narrator became more distant and out of it with her father. With her mother, she was always more eager, but you can tell that her father …show more content…
In paragraph 12, the author writes, “Mom wouldn’t leave me. We’d go together. Right? ‘But that’s only three days away.’ I stepped away from Mom and the shards of tile” (Cervantes). Cervantes writes about what happened after Izzy found out her mom was moving. This means that Izzy thinks about what her mom would do, but she was wrong. This situation creates tension. This is significant because Izzy thinks that her mom will take her with her, but she doesn’t and this causes tension between the two, causing Izzy to feel separated and less connected from her parent. Cervantes reveals in the novel, “‘New Mexico is worlds away from California. And what am I going to do for two whole months with someone I haven’t seen since I was six? That was half my life ago. She's a stranger!’ I felt a sudden urge to bolt for the front door and run” (24). The novel gives a scene of Izzy getting upset at her mom for leaving her. In other words, Izzy is upset with her mom for not taking her to Costa Rica and instead, she has to stay with her grandmother who she barely has a relationship with. This is major because it shows that Izzy’s tone changed to her mom when she got upset and that this situation will cause tension and difficulties for Izzy to stay close to her
