The continuum of care for a person of cancer begins with informing the patient that they have cancer and providing them options and help while they sort out their emotions. One aspect of care that many healthcare providers might ignore is performing palliative care. The patient needs to know that they have a team that will work with them throughout their disease, but also care for them for more than a paycheck. Throughout every phase of their disease, they need someone that they can rely on for their check-ups, questions and emotional support.

Whenever I get sick or feel unusually unhappy, I try to trick myself into thinking that I feel fantastic. I wear nice clothes to class, do my hair and makeup, and focus as well as I can because if I think negatively, my body will want to shut down on me and avoid trying hard in class or staying awake once I get home. While cancer is not something you can mentally fake your way out of, I imagine that some painful aspects of it can be lessened with mental health. You can focus on other things and try your hardest to ignore any pains that may be occurring on your body. I think both patients and health car providers can influence the patient’s health and state of mind by distracting them – conversations, games, stories, art – anything is better than knowing you are sick in a hospital and having everyone ignore you on top of that.
