The statement given to me basically states that by looking at our prison system which is a key component in our criminal justice system you can see that those who have power and money are the winners and they run the system and the laws that put people in prison. It means that the prison system could have biases because those who established it may carry the biases of winners. I take it as the wealthy basically can get away with anything. They use our prison system in order to make money for themselves and for the government. To me the quote just confirms the radical theorist point of view on crime; crime centers on political and social class issue and the problem with crime is in terms of class, race, gender, culture and history. For one thing the people associated with government lie. The reason the government exists is to serve the people. In order to do this, we already empower them to have greater abilities than us. Since they have the ability to know more than us it can lead to abuse of power. We believe that we live in a country where the ultimate power belongs to the people but it doesn’t. Governments and corporations work hand in hand to erode democracy. Those who call themselves our government understand this basic fact of human nature and they exploit it. They try to instill fear in the people and they depend on that fear to secure popular submission. Basically the government and the officials or those in power are looking out for themselves, they could really care less about anyone else and when it comes to justifying their actions they will do whatever it takes to stay and keep their power. The ruling class determines what is a crime based on their own self-interest and create the criminal justice system to support it. The government tries to legitimize their actions by enacting laws to make criminals out of lower working class people.
