There are a number of factors that contribute to the learning process. When facilitating a class a plethora of factors need to be considered and implemented to create an environment conducive to learning. The factors that are most important is the critical reflection of the instructor on their methods in the classroom as well the physical environment that learning takes place in. The idea of critical reflection is crucial for the improvement of the educators’ practices to develop a classroom that invites and welcomes a multitude of learners with a variety of learning styles and qualities such as race, gender, class, culture, and abilities. The class should be structured in a student centered way that involves discussions about the content in the course. Actively working with material produces a deeper understanding. Doing activities that provoke a deep thinking process that connects knowledge to previous understanding. In a study done on adult nursing students between problem and lecture based learning showed that the level of knowledge in the problem centered learning group was significantly higher than that of students in the lecture group. (Hwang) The desired outcome for schooling is knowledge if problem based learned produces more knowledge on the subject it should be implemented. Problem based learning also contributes to the motivation of the learner. “Learning motivation was significantly higher in the problem centered learning group.” (Hwang) Context is an important factor when developing a class and when appropriate problem based learning should be implemented due to its numerous benefits. “Benefits of problem based learning include assisting students to acquire and retain relevant information by integrating basic and clinical sciences and increasing retention, interest, and motivation (Finucane et al., 1998). To create an atmosphere of approachability the teacher should talk about their experiences and passions and therefore personalize learning. The teacher will develop a positive atmosphere built on understanding. The creation of this environment is important base to build upon in your relationship with the students. Once the instructor has proven their creditability it’s beneficial for the teacher to admit to error. Admitting to error creates an environment that accepts students’ mistakes as part of human nature that they shouldn’t be afraid of committing.
