Critical Reflection

As a pre-service teacher, it is important to critically reflect upon teaching practices. Fundamentally, critical reflection should go beyond mere strengths and weaknesses to consider the most important outcomes, those of student learning. In considering my future professional learning needs I have evaluated two (2) areas of my teaching that I can actively seek improvement. The first is teaching Information Communication Technologies (ICT), and the second is implementing behaviour management in the classroom. This commitment to seek continued improvement in these areas is at the core of the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) Standard 1 and Standard 7. I believe that I can be a more effective educator if I focus on these two aspects.

However, structure in the classroom ensures that a students’ right to learn is respected. I believe that each student has the right to feel safe. Rogers (2006) concurs with this theory, stating that a student needs to be aware of the rights of their peers and that acting in a detrimental manner within the learning environment is not acceptable.
A teacher is a role model in the education setting, and should behave in a manner that is respectful, courteous, patient, tolerant, accepting, understanding and relevant at all times. Cope (2007) necessitates that these learned behaviours need to be taught, but will be different in different cultures and age groups. Behaviour management in any classroom will undoubtedly ensure that teachers assert themselves in a manner, which aligns with the outcomes (Marsh, 2008).
Assertion in the classroom setting is about establishing fair rights and needs for every individual child, with the aim of protecting the rights that are fundamental to student learning in a safe environment (Rogers, 2006). Marsh (1992) agrees with this, stating that the development of class rules is imperative to this decision-making process. I believe that creating clear rules allows the educator and the students to see the importance of implementing a variety of strategies to support student’s personal development and active engagement with the world.
