Critical inquiry is the process of gathering and evaluating information, ideas, and assumptions from multiple perspectives to produce well-reasoned analysis and understanding that leads to new ideas, applications and questions. Critical inquiry is more than what is listed above, it is also possessing the ability to assess pieces of writing and use them within your own writing. I think the best example of my writing that supports this is my in-class writing “Seattle Versus the Homeless.” All over the essay, I included poll numbers from various sources, and statements from credible sources, like the mayor of Seattle. This was something I found a bit challenging because it was difficult finding unbiased and trustworthy polls and statements.

She focuses on ways to develop critical thinking skills. Nielson teaches that critical thinking helps you avoid jumping to conclusions easily. It becomes less complicated to understand foreign ideas as skills to analyze complex information develop. She shares three main points to follow as a thinker. You must have the right attitude and world perspective, understand the analytical process, and last use evidence to come up with an opinion or a solution to a problem.
The ability to think is an innate action that, for the most part, all people possess. Nonetheless, not everybody has the ability or knowledge of how to develop this quality into something greater and beneficial. Critical thinking is not inherent; rather the skills necessary to think analytically must be learned and practiced with an open mind. It involves listening with the intent of understanding others, drawing conclusions based on strong evidence and asking curiously about the situation. Not only must one be willing to evaluate a situation slowly and thoroughly, but one must also respect the views of others and accept the possibility of being wrong.
According to Paul Stearns, a philosophy professor, there are many definitions of critical thinking and they vary depending on its source. In the video, Professor Stearns enumerated four common ideas of all the different definitions of critical thinking that he found in his research. First, critical thinking is active that involves a thorough thought process. One must carefully prioritize and evaluate goals instead of passively being driven by emotions and desires when applying critical thinking. Second, critical thinking involves solving problems effectively.
My ability to think critically grew over the course of my degree in each of the four basic skills concerning critical thinking according to the Critical Thinking Basic Skills test; which was required as a part of this degree. Dr. Linda Elder, Dr. Richard Paul, and Mr. Rush Cosgrove of the Center developed the Critical Thinking Basic Concepts & Understanding Test for Critical Thinking at Sonoma State University. First, the Basic Critical Thinking Insight that was assessed by the test showed that I scored as a 56% overall. After finishing many of the courses and implementing the process of critical thinking on a regular basis I retook the test and scored an overall score of 75% and increased my score by 19%. This shows that the insight and the flow of critical thinking can, in fact, become improved through implementation.
Even though there are many barriers that can influence your critical thinking, I am frequently being influenced by my emotions and my family. Influencing factors include genetic endowment and special attributes that are race, gender, physical, appearance & attributes. Next are environmental conditions and events .Other than that are learning experiences and task Approach Skills that include work habits, personal standards of performance and emotional responses (Krumboltz, et al’s, 1976).
