“Cuomo Signs New Law Against Cyberbullying” is quite an eye-opening article. Personally, before this assignment, I failed to realize the wide spread effects of cyber bullying within our society. The article, written by Michael Virtanen, discusses the new law signed by Governor Cuomo to battle cyber bullying in New York State. Under the law, school districts within the state must take specific measures when dealing with cases involving cyber bullying. These measures include actions such as investigating all reports of cyber bullying, educating school personnel, and involving law enforcement when necessary. Bullying another person can have such harmful effects, and doing it via electronic devices allows someone to, in their mind, dehumanize another person. Therefore, because the bully is not attacking his/her victim face to face, he/she does not have to protect his/her self from the victim’s direct defense. Also, as I mentioned before, it allows the bully to view the victim as less then human, making it easier to terrorize the person.
Laws such as the one discussed in the article are extremely vital to end cyber bullying in our society. Without laws like these, in many cases, bullies could get away with their terrible, harmful actions because of previous loop holes and gray areas. Thankfully, these laws have made many people think twice before becoming a cyber bully. Personally, I have seen a number of my peers decide against posting a harassing comment on social media, due to fear of the consequences that these laws are enforcing. In such a technological world, these laws are essential in the movement to end
