After I was finished watching the video from TED, I realized that Daniel Kahneman is a very interesting man who has a spectacular amount of information on the different forms of selves and memory. I was very intrigued and shocked to learn the new information on how he described the impact memory has on happiness. When you think about happiness and what plays a role to produce the outcome of ones life, you don’t consider the differences in memories that you are experiencing versus memories that you are remembering. The two different forms of oneself that Daniel Kahneman discusses is the experiencing self and the remembering self. This occurs due to the experiences we have in our lives. “It turns out that the word ‘happiness' is just not a useful word anymore, because we apply it to too many different things.” (Kahneman) Daniel Kahneman believes that too many people are focused on the idea of making their life happy and trying to surround themselves with things that make them happy or satisfied. He also states how some people are confusing the memories they have versus the happiness they are experiencing. “It’s between being happy in your life, and being happy about your life or happy with your life.” (Kahneman) The experiencing self and remembering self actually play an important role on the happiness in your life due to the way we perceive memories. The happiness from the memory of the experiencing self is actually a more complicated role. You have to ask if the experiencing self is happy and then ask are the moment’s in the experiencing self’s life happy. IT comes down to how you can measure emotions in those situations. Then the remembering self is a completely different aspect. The happiness for the remembering self is based upon the satisfaction one has for their life. Therefore, memory is playing an important role on ones happiness. It just depends on what way happiness, or any specific emotion, is being evaluated or
