You are beautiful. What does that mean to you? Beauty is a term that has many definitions. For most, this will automatically mean outward appearance. According to Merriam-Webster, beauty is defined as “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit” (Beauty). Everyone has heard the sayings “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” or “everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it” but what does that mean to you? While most people see beauty as a physical appearance quality, the definition of beauty is something that pleases all senses and the mind. True beauty is something that goes beyond sight. True beauty shines from the inside out and not something that can be achieved just by appearance alone and not something that can be bought.
When we talk about beauty, we are often referring to physical attractiveness. Sure, a gorgeous, symmetric face and a matching fit “perfect” body is pleasing to look at but when you think about the memorable “beautiful people” you are probably thinking about someone has more to offer than just a pretty face or a sexy body. Mind-numbing advertisements that incessantly shown to us have become ingrained into memory, altering the definition of beauty into something superficial and vile. Sadly, beauty has been commercialized to represent fashion lines and cosmetics. Fashion is defined as “the prevailing style (as in dress) during a particular time” (Fashion). Furthermore, cosmetics are defined in Merriam Webster as, “done or made for the sake of appearance” (Cosmetics). This vision of what beauty is nothing more than a fantasized or “photoshopped” vision of superficial beauty.
