Marriage is dictionary defined as “the legally or formally recognized union of a man and a woman (or, in some jurisdictions, two people of the same sex) as partners in a relationship,”(Merriam-Webster). This alliance happens to be one of the most complex topics because of one reason, the taking of two independent people, putting them in a home and asking them to live one combined life. This is difficult for most people, but there are people who make it work. That is why society has shaped marriage into two categories, a positive healthy marriage, and a negative unhealthy marriage. According to Merriam-Webster, love may be defined as an intense feeling of deep affection, or feeling a deep romantic or sexual attachment to someone, so before marriage, how does one know whether someone truly loves the other person? After many years of observation and studying, I was able to define love as being able to provide the ultimate sacrifice for the one you love. What exactly is the ultimate sacrifice? It can be defined as many things, but the main definition is being able to give up something one really loves or enjoys for the person one loves. For example one of my relatives, which here we will call Bob, got married to a lovely woman who we will call Betty. Before Betty came along, Bob was an intense smoker, he smoked 2-3 packs of cigarettes a day. When he met Betty and began falling for her, he learned she was allergic to the smell of cigarettes, and it began to affect her health. He had a choice to make, it was either sacrifice his first love, cigarettes, or leave his true love Betty. He eventually left the one thing that made him happy to keep his true love happy and healthy. He worked endlessly to try to stop his bad habit. He went though transitions, and Betty was there with him sacrificing her time. It was then they both knew that their love was true and are currently carrying out a strong beautiful marriage of 23 years.
