What is Courage? Could it be a student stating their faith at gun point? Or could it be the girl who tells someone she had been raped and is looking for help? Courage is defined by “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain without fear; bravery (Courage).” Courage is not always easy to have in situations. Being the only person to stand up for what is right even when one is the only person stand up for the right thing. It was the summer of July in 2013 that I had the privilege of eating dinner with Mr. Adib Mahayni and his family. Mr. Mahayni works with my father in the oil and gas industry, Mr. Mahayni and his family are from Syria and work in Saudi Arabia. His family is apart of the Islamic religion like many people in that region. In that religion, women are sometimes oppressed, discouraged from speaking their mind, and in some areas are still considered property instead of people. Mr. Mahayni has a wife, two daughters, and a son. Because of where his family was located, there was much war between the country they lived in at the. time, Syria is in a struggle for its existence and is a very dangerous place to live, and because of the customs of Saudi Arabia, Mr. Mahayni moved his family to Montreal, Canada (Middle East). There his family was not only safe from the harm present in the country but his daughters and wife were free to not only speak their mind, but to get a great eduction. Mr Mahayni took his family where the women in his life could be free. Even after he takes his family to Montreal he still goes back to work in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where he runs his business company. The ability to separate a family for the good of his wife and children, even when it was half way across the world, took an abundant amount of courage from Mr.
