What is an American Dream? The dictionary definition of an American Dream is, the ideal that every U.S. citizen has an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. What does that really mean? This means that if you fixate your hard work and determination for a goal to be achieved, like having a better living for your children or simply a bigger house, you will certainly achieve your goal and equal opportunity for this dream in America. Throughout the years technology and education has changed, also society. Today, society has more rights, mainly individuals of other races. So has The American Dream changed in society's eyes? Some people are born into wealth, so The American Dream is not always success from hard work, while many other people work and sacrifice all they have for that dream they were always yearning for. According to Steven W. Bender from New York Times, reaching the American Dream is harder for people of color. A Mexican couple arrived from Mexico with only one job choice, a Portland Factory. In the Portland Factory both earned only about $7.75 an hour nearly close to the state minimum wage, which was $7.05. In result of the lack of education, speaking English, and more, the were being paid a bit over minimum wage. It’s harder for colored people to achieve the American Dream and really need to put all their hard work towards it. Not only is race an issue, but also gender. Many females that have the same amount of education and qualification as a male working the same field, get paid less than that male. Sexism and racism is the hardship individuals of color or gender are facing when fighting through to achieve the American Dream. With all the factors stated, the American Dream cannot be specified as one definition, it all varies for every citizen, every race, every culture, every religion, every gender, or anything that changes the meaning of the American Dream to them, it is a very personal definition to every individual on this
