Definition – Love
What is the definition of the word love? According to Merriam Webster Dictionary one definition of love is “a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person” and another definition in the same dictionary is “affection felt by people who have a romantic relationship.” Ever since I was a young boy I have heard a lot of people say I love you, but not everyone has the same definition. I have been thinking of this for the past five months and more so recently because after five years of marriage my wife decided she doesn’t want to love me anymore. Is love conditional? Does love expire? Is love even real? I have asked my Mom and my sister and my priest. None of the answers really answered the question.
When I was a little boy back in Chicago my always told me before bed she loved me and said have sweet dreams. The one thing I knew is as long as I heard those four words everything was ok in my world. As I got to be a teenager and young adult and would go out with my friends for a while or out for the evening my Mom would say “have fun, be careful and I love you.” I never thought about it too much, to me it was just a conditioned response to me saying I was leaving.

I recently started thinking what the real meaning of love is and would it match the dictionaries definition. My Mom gave me a bible and said to read and I then realized even if I am unsure what the real definition of love is, there is no greater love than the love of Jesus. His loved led him to die on a cross for our sins. One passage my Mom should me was "Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud, it is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs, love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves. Love never fails..." (Corinthians.
