Developing a Working Thesis
The development of a thesis statement is perhaps the most important part of any research paper, essay, or other informative piece of writing. The question arises then, how does a writer develop a thesis statement that engages the reader and delivers its intended message? In order to develop an effective thesis statement, an author must outline the purpose for the paper and express the view or assumption made about this purpose. This will grab the readers interest and set the stage for the author to offer credible support that validates the assertions or solutions made throughout the paper. This brief article discusses research done by researchers at the University of Denver that explains that for many years, communities around Denver were designed using the “low-density suburban sprawl model” (“Urban Planning,” 2014). It goes into detail regarding the struggles faced throughout Denver communities while searching for affordable housing especially for poorer community members. Insights about the growing issue are also provided by the president of the Rocky Mountain Mutual Housing Association, experts on the topic from Southeast Business Partnership, Denver’s housing program manager, and many other reputable community leaders. This article provides a unique perspective because of the date it was written and the fact that it foreshadowed the problem worsening over time if nothing was done to stop it.
