English 101 Reflection

Before I took this English 101 class, I did not really know the emphasis on writing and what would go into it. Before, I would just sit down at my desk and just write whatever came to mind, not really taking into consideration what goes into writing a quality essay. I struggled with this mechanism of writing because figuring out what to include and what sources to use became a problem for me. I didn’t know how or understand how to cite correctly, I wasn’t clear on who my audience was, and I wasn’t clear on the topic I was writing about in general. Those ways used before this class was my idea of writing a good essay, but after going through this English 101 class, it allowed me to cover all of the problems that I had handled and find solutions to these issues. In English 101, I was not only able to make my papers better, I was able to go beyond that and even make them more powerful than they were before. My writing improved from the use of peer review and author questions that has been implemented in this class. This type of system is very helpful in finding specific issues and things throughout my essay. Creating a thesis was something that was drilled into our heads throughout high school, mainly during my junior and senior year. But I wasn’t really sure the importance of a thesis or why I needed one when I have an introduction paragraph. Usually, I would just skip my thesis until the end and then after having written everything I would go back and try to create one at the last minute, so no effort would really go into it. But with this class, I now take priority in my thesis and I figure out what it is first before anything else. Having some background in understanding how to create one, I didn’t really find it that difficult to make a decent one. But that was really all I could do. I have now learned how important a thesis is, as it basically maps out your essay and defines what it is going to be about. Throughout this class, I was able to see what goes into making a good thesis that covers the information I am writing about but still draws the attention of the readers. For example, the thesis for my teaching essay was, “. The shortage of teachers is a global wide epidemic that is causing many issues with schools and in education.” Though this is a good thesis, it could cover more and have more detail included into it.
