This book contains the diary entries of Anne Frank and her experience as a Jew in hiding during the Holocaust. The burglars broke the door and fled. Later, a couple shone torch through the hole. Then Anne’s father, Van Daan, and Peter quietly rushed upstairs to escape being seen. Soon, everyone was in a panic. They waited in silence so they could not be heard. The police arrived, investigating the house. Everyone was afraid they were going to be taken away by the Gestapo. Soon the police left and all they could do was wait until their protectors came. The fear of being caught was always with them. For the whole stay at the Secret Annexe, Anne Frank and the other residents have been waiting for the invasion of the Allies on the German-occupied countries. The English said on the radio that it had to be delayed. In 1944, all they ever talked about was the invasion and when it would happen. It was supposed to happen a couple of years ago so the whole country of Holland was waiting. Finally, on June 6, 1944, the invasion started. It was known as D-day. The Allied Forces have invaded France. The people of the Secret Annexe have put up a great commotion. They all hoped it was their chance for victory and freedom. They contribute money to people, create identity cards, find hiding places, and work for people in hiding. Another thing I learned is Gerrit Bolkestein, a Dutch politician, was one of the reasons why Anne Frank’s diary was published. On March 29, 1944, Bolkestein made a radio announcement saying he would collect evidence, such as diaries and letters, of the war. I also learned that the original title of Anne Frank’s diary was Het Achterbuis, which roughly translates to “the Secret Annexe.” I learned more about D-Day, which was an Allied invasion on France and other German-occupied countries on June 6, 1944. One thing I reviewed was how Adolf Hitler gained his power. He created a political party, the National Socialist German Workers' Party, or Nazi Party. He led this party to believe that the Jews were the cause for the decline in Germany’s power and that Germans were the master race. Hitler grew stronger during the worldwide depression in 1929. He grew even stronger when he was appointed as Chancellor of Germany. Soon, he made all political parties, except for the Nazi Party, outlawed. Another thing I learned was Hitler began a war in the east on September 1939. After that, England and France declared war on Germany. Hitler’s armies were pouring into countries and attacking, such as Poland, Denmark and Norway. I also learned that Germany attacked the Soviet Union on June, 1941 although he
