This lecture targets the learners who are currently receiving their education and those yet to come and how they should be prepared for everyday interaction with information and communication technology (ICT). Along with preparing for the daily use of ICT the student should also obtain digital competence in key competencies spell out by the European Parliament and the Council of European Union. These digital competencies are believed to be essential in order for one to be able to adapt to the rapidly changing world. This role play involves drama and classroom activities to engage students, teachers and parents. The foundation of the paper is based on a real life scenario of a school girl being deceived by an older person she is talking to in a chat room. A startling statistic is given that 1 of 10 children who engage in chat room activities have attended a face-to-face meeting.
The role play involves a teacher receiving anonymous information about an unsuspecting young girl chatting online to a potential predator. The chat is displayed where the students can view it. As the role play continues information is provided to the students to help them evaluate and assess what is going on and what to watch for. During some points of the role play electronic polls are given to the students to answer regarding what they “young girl” should do to test their understanding.
In addition to the actual role play a study was conducted to identify the different variables that affect the educational use of the role play. At the end of the study a survey was sent out to the students to find out what they found most helpful from the role play. Only 52% of students found a benefit of the role play and 26% found it
