Throughout the semester in Discourse 200, I have noticed significant changes in my writing and speaking abilities. I’ve also learned more about myself by noticing my personal strengths and weaknesses, completing assignments, and participating throughout the course. These experiences, which are noticeable throughout this portfolio, are indicators of such changes and should be evident through the improvements I have made in the process from writing rough drafts to revising for final drafts, as well as overall improvements in writing and speaking. In this course, I’ve learned the process that I need to write a paper or speech effectively and efficiently. I’ve taken risks by trying different processes to form ideas and drafts, and implement effective revisions. This has allowed me to discover the process that allows me to produce the best paper. However, I think that I could have participated more in class. I really enjoyed discussions in small groups and participated in them, but as far as class discussions go, I didn’t really participate. I know that one of my strengths is listening because I loved to listen to people’s ideas and think about them in discussions, but it was hard for me to interject my own comments. I think this is because I have trouble speaking in front of people, and also because I get caught up in listening to others. However, I was prepared with comments and ideas for almost every class, and something that I need to work on beyond this class is learning how to lead discussions by sharing my ideas.
