Advertising is way of persuading people into doing/not doing something. It could be to persuade someone to buy something or inform something dangerous. The most common way to advertise is through television or the internet. Advertisement is one of the most popular ways of marketing and many companies use various tactics and languages techniques to convince someone. Identify and discuss two commercials which you found to be particularly effective. Discuss the language features employed which you found to be effective in appealing to two different target audiences. (Two different gender groups). In advertisement 1, the most common language featured employed is the use of repetition. This is shown in the advertisement by repeating sounds or phrases (ie. Shouting the ‘er’ sound from power for a long period of time, ‘body odor’). Repetition is often used to make the viewer remember the product more easily since most people will forget the name of a product in an advertisement if it is only said once. In this context, it is used to show how much people die from smoking in the UK. Using statistics is much superior than simply saying “Lots of people die from smoking” as statistics give information to the viewers as to how serious something is for how many people are effected.
