“I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different.” -Veronica Roth. You might recognize the name. The up and coming author that wrote the Divergent series? Yes, the 27-year-old from New York is the author I picked. Throughout this essay, I hope you learn new information about this already successful young woman. You’ll learn about my connection to this author, what her prompt was to write the divergent series, how she started writing, and why this book is so popular among society. I read the Divergent series in 8th grade. And to put it simply: I loved it. If you have not been “with the times” lately, Divergent is about a girl (Tris Prior) who lives in Chicago in the future where society has been divided into five factions. These factions ultimately determine what your community and lifestyle will be for as long as you live. As each person enters adulthood, he or she must choose a faction and commit to it for life. Tris selects Dauntless -- those who pursue bravery above all else. However, when she joins Dauntless, this leads to the discovery that she is a Divergent. Although there are many people who aspired to be an author when they were 12, Roth persisted with her natural skills and proceeded to write stellar books at the age 24. Roth has been writing ever since she was “too old to play pretend in the backyard”. Veronica gives credit to her mother for her love for reading/writing. Her mother always told her “boredom is not allowed”. This motivated Veronica to be creative. She writes because she likes to and because she likes working through things in her head.
