Divergent is a young adult dystopian novel written by Veronica Roth. The narrator of the story is the main character, Beatrice "Tris" Prior. The story begins with Natalie, Beatrice's mother, cutting her hair. Beatrice explains that her "faction" only allows its people to look at their reflection once a year. Her reflection shows a narrow face, wide, round eyes, long, chestnut color hair and a long, thin nose. She estimates her age to be around sixteen. Beatrice feels nervous about taking "the aptitude test". As Beatrice reveals, the aptitude test it is an exam that kids who are of age take to determine which faction he or she belongs in. Society in the story is split into five factions, Abnegation, Dauntless, Candor, Amity, and Erudite. Beatrice, her mother Natalie, her father Andrew, and her brother Caleb are from Abnegation. They believe in being selfless, helping others and are considered the political leaders of their society. Those from Dauntless are considered the protectors of their society. Those from Candor represent truth and the justice system. Those from Amity cultivate the land and provide sustenance. Those from Erudite revolve themselves with knowledge and research. As she walks into a completely mirrored room, Beatrice is greeted by a Dauntless woman named Tori. Tori gives her a vial of liquid to drink. Beatrice's mind is transported to the cafeteria. She is given two options, a basket with cheese or a basket with a knife. She does not pick either of them. A door is opened and a dog comes running towards her.
