Divergent By Veronica Roth Argument Essay

In order for a society to live in unison and conformity, it often tries to categorize its members based off of their personalities and traits. With these categories in places, riffs between certain groups may occur which lead to a higher pressure for unity in the society. In the novel Divergent by Veronica Roth, published in 2011, readers are able to visualize the dangers presented by society when they wish for conformity by using juxtaposition and logical fallacy. In this novel, author Veronica Roth describes a dystopian community where all of its members are forced to conform and fit into different categories (or factions) based off of certain traits that they possess. She begins with a girl who is preparing for the test that determines the faction which she belongs to. The test, however, does not work on her

One of these devices is juxtaposition. This is when an author places a parallel between two objects, people, concepts or themes. In Divergent, Roth places this parallel between the theme of conformity and the clothing that the members of society are forced to wear. Each faction is forced to wear a certain color that corresponds with the traits of that faction. The society is forcing each of its members to be uniform and in conformity with one another. Another device Roth uses is logical fallacy. This is when an error is found in reasoning which ends up leaving an argument invalid. Logical fallacy can be found during the scene when the main character just finished her test. The test administrator was explaining her results and how that “Typically, each stage of the simulation eliminates on or more of the factions, but in [the main character’s] case, only two [had] been ruled out” (Roth 20). The argument of finding the exact faction where everyone belongs was left invalid by the occurrence of there being more than one fit for the main
