This paper explores the diverse aspects of the concept of social facilitation. Firstly, its historical background, conceptualization and metamorphosis into a concrete notion are discussed, Triplet, Allport and Zanjonc being the major contributors. Social facilitation is the tendency for the people to perform well on simple (repetitive) tasks and worse on difficult ones, in the presence of others. Incidents of social facilitation are prevalent in everyday life and so can be experienced in any type of setting, such as an examination hall.
