What are the current “facts” in terms of progress for minorities and women in the workplace? What lessons of diversity have been learned? What are the “best” employers doing?
Over the last few decades there has been progress when it comes to diversity. As a whole we still have a long way to go. Statistically woman and minorities hold less top management positions with minorities being lower than woman. This is also true when comes to wage equality. There have been great strides when it comes to wages, but both woman and minorities are still behind white men.
It has been proven in numerous studies that diverse teams are more effective and have better success than teams without diversity. This can attribute to better profits and greater innovation for a company. Studies have also shown that when women are present in upper management that companies tend to be more profitable and have better financials.2
There are many avenues for a company to encourage inclusiveness, meaning that everyone feels that they belong. This starts with training and/or seminars on diversity and sensitivity, and teaching about unconscious bias, as sometimes we are unaware that we are bias. Your company can do online courses, guest speakers, develop their own program or pick from various companies that will host a program. These programs are designed to educate individuals on the vast differences that we have and how to work together without unconscious biases and stereotyping people. On a managerial level, diversity training would help the manager to know how to deal with these differences and how to prevent obstacles that come along when there is diversity. There are also meant to help break down barriers that can exist. These courses can also contain team building
