The main issue discussed in chapter 10 of the book “Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education” by Sonia Nieto and Patty Bode, was the issue of bilingual programs never having enough support by schools. In addition “bilingual teachers have been segregated programmatically and physically from other staff members, making both teachers and students feel isolated from the community (p.380)”. Many colleges prevail in the task of creating a more diverse student population on their campuses. However, the majority of colleges struggle with creating and promoting meaningful interactions between students with different backgrounds, according to Frank Bruni (Bruni). This form of diversity has proven to be an incredible challenge for college campuses everywhere. How can college help foster diverse interactions among students? Riverside City College has created a solution to this problem.
I will contribute to the diversity at CSU because I am myself diverse. I come from a Mexican background and a place known for diversity. I have lived in Montbello for 10 years now, so I have interacted with lots of people from lots of different backgrounds. My school is also international so we get to know from Brazil, Finland, Thailand, etc. I am able to interact easier with different people because of my experiences.
In a terrifying dystopia, “People will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think” (Huxley 1). Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, shows the starkness of a world where uniformity is paramount and diversity is despised as the root of instability. No one thinks for themselves, but instead they simple echo what they have been programmed to say. Every person is bred to act and think the same as others in their social class. Diversity is shunned along with old world beliefs and conservative morals.
Diversity Statement My current field education placement at the vineyard church of Evanston, which is a part of my master of divinity program bring people from fifty-five different nations. These people come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. This is my second year at this placement which ends in the May of this year. Most of the time, I am surrounded by my Caucasian friends and colleagues, therefore, this was enriching experience to listen to the stories and struggles of the people of diverse backgrounds.

Over the past years, America has had many immigrants come from all over the world to become American citizens, which allowed America to become a diverse country. The different cultures, languages, and the races make America the melting pot. While some people believe America embracing diversity creates unity, it can be argued that America is moving toward a new standard in which diversity and individuality are encouraged more than uniformity and conformity because people are being taught different languages and some people combine or teach others their culture. Children all over the country are being taught many different languages. Learning different languages is important because our country is more diverse than others.
Currently, at Texas Tech University, I continuously strive to spread the amount of diversity within the student body. By being a member of the African Student Organization at Texas Tech, I represent a group of individuals who seek to educate the Lubbock community about the richness and diverse cultures that Africa presents. Diversity can be defined as the variety of beliefs, interests, and experiences within groups of people. Redlands’ excellent ethnic diversity reveals statistics with less than half of white majority and more than half of minority students. As a Hispanic female, the word minority has traveled with me constantly. The fact that The University of Redlands encourages all minorities as well as the majority to pursue a future career captivates my attention. Truly, diversity has inspired me of to collaborate and compete with many different cultures and morals.
Chapter 2 was very interesting. It discusses oppression, and the undesirable feeling it brings to members within a society. To be more specific, Webster-Dictionary defines oppression as cruel or unjust treatment (Merriam-Webster, 2016). People who experience oppression within society, are known as minorities. These individuals are less in numbers, and unlike the mainstream population, they are very much misunderstood.
A greedy, money-consuming, and lethargic person most likely comes to mind when one thinks of the characteristics of an American. We have somehow managed to earn the stereotype that we abuse our freedom and use it to our advantage. While this may be true to a certain extent, it seems people always forget the positive connotations that contribute to the qualities of a true American. The freedom the United States has is something we gained through hard work and dedication and is nothing to be taken for granted. Despite the stereotypical definition it is most commonly deceived as, an American is someone who supports and lives through the ideas of equality, patriotism, freedom and society while overcoming everyday diversity.
We live in a very diverse and exciting world today. Technology is advancing rapidly every single day. With that we have advancements in modern warfare. And with that comes fear from all citizens throughout the world, and rightfully so. Citizens fear the intentions of other countries, and they should.
All students deserve to be treated fairly as individuals. When considering the diversity of the class members, we will celebrate the uniqueness that the differences contribute. Because I have high expectations that all my children can be successful, adjustments may be necessary because everyone is not the same (Burden, 2017, p. 115). It is vital that a spirit of understanding and edification is active amongst the students and from the teacher (Romans 14:19, King James Version) to produce fruits of mutual respect: reduced bias, positive academic outcomes, enhanced problem solving, and healthy group dynamics (Cousik, 2015, p. 54). For differences that stem from culture, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, the adjustments will involve bridging the cultural gap between the students’ diversity and the curriculum.
