In the poem “Do not go gentle into that good night,” it talks about how you need to fight for your life. The author of the poem is describing how important it is to fight for your life and uses four different categories to place men. First he talked about how men have to be wise by saying “Through wise men at their end know dark is night” (4). This shows that death is a natural part of life and these men are wise enough to respect it. Then it goes on to talk about good men and how they are far and few. According to choose life men do not want to die because they know their deeds will not be remembered regardless of their achievements. A metaphor is comparing something without using the word “like” or “as”. One example of a metaphor is “That good night,”(1, 6, 12, 18) which shows up numerous times leading the reader to believe that “Thomas knew that death was right” (Chose Life). He uses this metaphor to avoid using the ugly word of death. Thomas avoided using the word death to strongly get the point across that people need to fight for their lives. Another metaphor that came up was “the dying of the light” (3, 9, 15, 19) “Which suggests peaceful surrender (Chose Life). Since Thomas really wants to get the point across that people need to fight for their lives he emphasizes how much they need to fight again. This could have various meanings. One being “their “blind eyes" could also refer to the fact that in their quest to learn of life, they are no more closer to God than those who have enjoyed life” (psychiatric services 10). This is showing that Thomas believes that even if you are faithful, you will go to the same place as the unfaithful (people who enjoy life) when you die. He is also saying people who lose their sight about life tend to have an more adventurous life. This is showing that people need to let loose and let things go so that they can live life to their full potential and never let go. Thus through the use of paradoxes one can see how you need to fight for your life and not accept death as an
