Doctor assisted suicides occur when patients who know they will not get better and don’t want to suffer anymore, have doctors prescribe them will lethal doses of drug and counseling. In Oregon, 1,749 people had used this method as of January 23, 2017 and 1,127 patients died from ingesting the drugs. This is a method that is widely growing due to the fact that people would rather end their suffering in dignity rather than unexpectedly. Many people think that this is a way of “easy death” just because these people are depressed, but I firmly believe that terminally ill patients should have the right to doctor assisted suicide. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you like it if people are fighting for you to stay alive, but then complain about having their tax dollars go to you? This act is currently legal in 6 states: Oregon, Vermont, Washington, California, and The District of Columbia. People are fighting for it to be legal in all states because they believe they should have a choice for their own lives. However, if people want this method for the simple fact of being depressed; they shouldn’t be allowed to. But, I do feel like people who want to die and be able to say goodbye before their body fails on them should be allowed to. Bernice Packford, 95, said, “I have decided, after much reflection, that I wish to end my life now, before my mind and body deteriorate further so I am incapable of making that decision… Can Parliament find the gumption to give me the right to assisted suicide? I could then have my family and friends around me to say goodbye as I die with dignity.” I agree with Bernice. I feel that people should have the right to say goodbye without leaving their family with the grief of not being able to say what they wanted to say to her.
