Donald Trump's inauguration speech - a more inward-looking America

The following essay will contain the newly elected president Donald J. Trump's inauguration speech when he got sworn into office on January 20th. The essay will focus on the model of com-munication, his choice of words and forms of appeal. The essay will then swiftly shift its course to Barack Obama's inauguration speech back in 2009 to point out the similarities and the very differ-ences there are between the two speeches.

This was an interesting way the president decided to express himself because the word carnage has never appeared in an inauguration speech before. The context in which he presented this statement in was about gangs, crimes and drugs stealing lives and therefore referring these issues to the term carnage evoked a lot of feelings at the receivers' end, mostly nega-tive. This again highlights his appeal form, pathos. He is well aware of the fact that the word car-nage will evoke immediate attention as well as feelings, since it is an informal thing to say in a speech, especially in an inauguration speech. Most importantly he is indirectly saying that if America had secure borders with little to no illegal immigration these issues will decrease. In his speech, he portrays America as weak and dangerous because of the before mentioned issues and him saying carnage just puts the cherry on the top. He is trying to criticize the current state of America and promises that he will give his "last breath" for a prosperous and more inward-looking America where the only thing that is first is America. This is a very clever business strategy - undermine the current state of things and offer a package filled with solutions. It should not surprise anyone though; Donald J. Trump is a businessman and a very successful one. He is not a politician and he has an alternative way of getting things done than ever seen before in office.
