Doomed from the Start Racism has been an ongoing issue for centuries, and although has seemly decreased over the years, it is an issue that is still relevant in today’s time. This advertisement by The International League Against Racism and Anti- Semitism (LICRA) aims to demonstrate the issue of racism in a powerful way. This LICRA ad shows multiple newborn babies lying in a hospital crib, and it is apparent that one baby is different from the rest. Instead of having toys in its crib, the baby is dressed up as a servant simply because he is not white like the rest of them. Pathos is the main strategy that is being used in order to get the point across because it automatically makes the reader think with emotion. When looking at the image that the advertisement portrays, you see newborn babies lying in a hospital crib. This image will quickly capture the audience of mothers and fathers who have children, as it makes them think about when they delivered their own children. The message of the article will be delivered once the viewer notices that the Hispanic child in the middle of three white babies is dressed up as a servant. The baby is holding cleaning supplies, while the other babies have toys in their crib. The images on this advertisement will make parents and adults feel guilt, as they think of their own children in that position. It will seem unfair, and completely wrong because a baby is incapable of doing anything to deserve that treatment. A newborn baby is extremely vulnerable, and simply cannot do things to protect themselves or their image. Because there are children in the picture, the ad can be directed towards other children, and the purpose of the ad could be easily explained to them. The advertisement focuses on the fact that people face racism at a young age, practically as soon as they are born, and targeting the younger generation could lead to a change in this pattern. If this point gets across while people are young, it could stay with them forever. Although mildly accurate, this advertisement is too complex to be understood by children. Racism is a major issue, and adults will be able to make a better connection with the advertisement, relating to it through personal experiences.
