The notorious Dr. Mengele, also known as the “angel of death”, was one of the doctors in Auschwitz . Though he was not like all of the doctors. He experimented on Jewish children and adults. He did most of his experiments on Jewish twins. He was known for all of the experiments he did on the twins. Dr. Mengele treated the twins like they were his own, until a truck came and took them away to a building were Josef Mengele was waiting. Dr. Mengele did many experiments on the twins. One time Mengele’s assistance rounded up 14 pairs of Gypsy twins during one night. Mengele placed them on his polished dissecting table and put them to sleep. After the twins had been taken from their parents, they were taken to the showers. SInce they were “Mengele’s children” they were treated differently than other prisoners. Besides the obvious, suffering through medical experiments, the twins were often allowed to keep their hair and allowed to keep their own clothes. Dr. Mengele treated the twins like they were his children. The twins were given brief instructions in makeshift “classes” and were sometimes even allowed to play soccer. The children were not required to do hard work and had jobs like being a messenger. Twins were also spared from punishments as well as from the frequent selections within the camp. Conditions for the twins were one of the best in Auschwitz, until trucks came to take them away to the experiments. Generally the twins had to have large amounts of blood drawn from them daily. The twins had to fight for survival, but they still had better portions of food and better sleeping conditions than all of the other death camps. Mengele left Germany in hope of Building a better life elsewhere. Mengele was terrified of being caught he began to chew off the tips of his moustache. Swallowing them after a few months the hair collected in his intestines into balls blocking his digestive tract, it was a life threatening condition. After a while of living somewhere else he abandoned his dream of going back home to Germany. While swimming off the Brazilian Coast in 1979 he drownded. He was buried under a false
