Throughout David Foster Wallace’s essay, he describes a SNOOT, a figure of an intellectual. A SNOOT is basically a grammar nazi. However, a SNOOT sees the phrase, “grammar nazi,” as self-mocking and a dysphemism.
“Don’t be afraid to explore, ask questions and take chances,” my dad would tell me. You see, my dad, an engineer, tried to get me to question everything. He is never afraid to learn a little bit more about something he already knows and is always eager to learn something new; I take after him. I love to learn, and figure out how things work. It's not surprising, then, that I plan on majoring in engineering; what is, perhaps, surprising, is that these same habits of mind led to me developing an interest in and passion for theatre.
Arts Board Application I believe that the arts are an essential part of any student’s curriculum. Not only does it enrich their lives, it teaches them skills such as the importance of practice and repetition in order to perfect their work; it teaches that perseverance and hard work shows in their creations; and that although mistakes are made, one can still make their mistakes into something great, as long as they don’t give up. This is why it’s important to have the arts represented in a school like Greenhill, where academics tend to be the main focus for many students. Other from ISAS and occasional concerts, students don’t often get to showcase their work to their peers. Too often during ISAS do students attend mostly Greenhill productions, and students who aren’t able to attend rarely see the hard work those in the Greenhill fine arts program put into their creations and performances.
Dear, Theatre Design Admissions Board: This letter states my intentions for applying to the University of Alberta Theatre Design Program for the Fall of 2016, and why I would be a great candidate for this program. I would like to study at the University of Alberta’s Theatre Design Program because of the way the program is geared towards hands on learning, giving you experience in which you can use in your career later on. As an artist and student I thrive in environments that allow you to be innovative and hands on, which is why I believe I would be a great fit for this program. If I were to be accepted into this program, I would gain the knowledge and experience I need to continue my career in Theatre Design. This program opens- many doors
As a member of and leader within the International Thespian Society, there is a saying from Alexander Pope that drives me every day to meet my goals both in and outside of theatre: “act well your part, there all the honor lies.” As my time in high school theatre comes to an end, I think of what these words will mean to me in the future and how they will continue to shape me, as they have done so for many years. I would not be the kind, compassionate, and outgoing spirit that I am today without the experiences that I obtained from working with my fellow thespians and friends. What carries me through even the darkest of times is my passion and love for performance, as this motivates me to solve problems in new and unusual ways, create a sense of community with others, and grow as both a student and teacher to others.
I am applying to your Bachelor’s of Fine Arts: Acting for the Theater for the fall of 2017. I am currently in my second year of a Bachelor’s of Arts; majoring in Film Production with a minor in Drama at the University of New Brunswick. I am interested in your program because of its content and location. The content of the program seems to be what I am looking for; I am currently studying Drama at the University of New Brunswick and their program doesn’t offer what I am looking for.
Education to me is a critical building block that shapes the world and pushes the boundaries of individuals to achieve astounding milestones. Rutgers has the resources and opportunities to achieve those milestones an individual like me to further pursue a stronger foundation in the field of filmmaking. From a significant roster of courses and advanced equipment available to students. These are several key factors of the program that will aid in my success at Rutgers and to my filmmaking career.
I’m sure that you get a lot of the same stuff in these applications, most of which are just like the one that I am writing now. The reason that you are getting so many of these applications is probably one of two reasons: Applicant wishes to grow as a performer and get out of their comfort zone a little, or applicant loves the arts and to be a part of something special. If you have received another reason, please let me know what it is. Unfortunately, you will not be getting a third reason or different reason from me. I am applying for this scholarship because I too wish to grow as a performer and my love for the arts is what keeps me going.
The outstanding achievements that define the College of Arts and Sciences are a source of inspiration for all. In a short period of time, it has been exciting to see how our faculty and students have moved the college to become one of the best global public research colleges in the country. This is due to its deep commitment to solving real-world problems through excellence in research, while providing an outstanding and affordable liberal arts education and engaging students’ talents in the global world in which we live. I recognize how privileged I am to lead the College of Arts and Sciences, the oldest and largest college at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, with such talented, creative and ambitious people. Here are a few highlights that demonstrate my excitement for what all the members of this college have accomplished: • Among our many students’ achievements and
Throughout my whole life, I have always been sort of a lone wolf. As a child of two immigrant parents, I have often felt the struggle of feeling alone and without guidance in American society. Both of my parents are Mexican immigrants that came into this country during the 1990’s looking for a better place to start a family. Ever since I was a young boy, my parents have repeatedly told me that being a hard worker and taking school seriously were going to be vital ideals that I needed to follow to achieve success. Neither of my parents had the opportunity to study at an institution of higher education, and their dream had always been for their son to be the first in their family to do so.
I cannot imagine a world without poetry and art; my life has always been a balance between the artistic and the academic. An obsession with words and aesthetics inspired me to take an interdisciplinary approach to drawing— last year, I created ten compositions that were composed of a charcoal self-portrait and relevant poem I wrote. My message was that words, like art, reveal our soul. I am in every single sketch and scribbled poem I have created. Fashion has been my lifeblood since I learned how to operate a sewing machine at age seven.
Imagine you are an actor arriving at an audition. You enter a waiting room and see all these people who talk like you, look like you, and are auditioning for the same part as you. Would you still have what it takes to show someone how you are different? Theatre has been apart of education in schools since 1965. It has helped guide people and it has given the world great entertainers.
Some shows leave me speechless, or smiling like a kid, or in tears – which as exactly what I hope to be able to do for viewers someday. As I study in one of the greatest schools of arts in Israel, I always try to learn from my friends, the theatre and music majors but also the dancing and drawing majors. I appreciate the fact I study in such a creative place, surrounded by talented students, and the experience it gave me in leading big projects such as short films I 've directed and acted in, and working in teams, learning how to collaborate. Most importantly, it made me an open-minded, ready to learn and improve, person and artist.
“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women are merely players,” (Shakespeare), meaning the whole world is like a stage show and humans are the actors. The quote proves that life can imitate art even when it’s not recognized, art is everywhere you look, in places you never thought to look. Theater is represented in any imaginable way, so why is it not good enough for a simple required subject in school? Fine arts such as drama, dance, and art programs get cut from high schools due to the expenses that go into them. People say theater is not needed for the future, no help in the “real world”, and it’s not a life skill.
My Ideal Self Who/what do you want to achieve/have, why? In the shorter term (3 years), I want to graduate from HELP University’s Degree of Psychology in first-class honours. I understand claims stating such academic achievement is merely a graduation certificate, without guarantee of work opportunities. However, my aim is not motivated towards work opportunities or anything materialistic; I just want to appreciate and value every learning opportunity.
