Research on DUIs What is the problem with DUIs? “Driving while either intoxicated or drunk is dangerous and drivers with high blood alcohol content or concentration are at greatly increased risk of car accidents, highway injuries and vehicle deaths.”(1) All injury deaths caused by drunk driving are completely preventable. Although the percentage rates of alcohol-related accidents have decreased in the past decades, yet there are still a great number of preventable accidents. “The average blood alcohol content among fatally injured drinking drivers is 0.16.”(1) High blood alcohol content drivers tend to be the sex of a male, mainly around the age of 25-35, and have a history of driving while impaired and polydrug abuse.(1) The relative risk …show more content…

Nine out of ten Americans who attend social events where alcohol is being served would like to see designated drivers being used. And the proportion of people using or being a designated driver has increased dramatically over time. Each year over 73,000,000 Americans serve as a designated driver or are driven home by one.(4) If you see a driver doing these things report the car along with its description and location, to the police or sheriff. The driver may be ill or intoxicated and should not be on the road. Signs of drunk drivers include weaving, driving with windows rolled down in rolled down, passing dangerously, straddling the center line, making wide turns, driving slowly, tailgating and forgetting to turn on headlights.(4) To prevent drinking and driving, especially under the influence, some schools are breathalyzing kids and for the most part, stores that sell alcohol aren’t selling to people under 21.(5) Even though the laws that were created to lower the drinking issues that we have, they obviously aren’t enough to keep most people from getting underages or in accidents. The only thing being done to prevent consequences from driving drunk are DUIs, legal trouble, or even worse, accidents.
