Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. Edgar had one brother and one sister. The brother’s name was William Henry Leonard Poe. became a sailor and amateur poet. Edgar sister’s name Rosalie Mackenzie Poe. His parents were Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe Jr. who were both professional actors, but they both died before Edgar was only three years old. So then John and Frances Allan took him in as a foster child in Richmond, Virginia. Because John made a lot of money so he sent Edgar to the best boarding schools and later the University of Virginia. He did very well in school until he was forced to leave because of debt from gambling. In 1827, he moved back to Boston and enlisted in the US Army. When he left West Point he started To do writing full time. During this time he moved a lot of times to New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Richmond. From 1831 to 1835, he lived in Baltimore, where his father was born, with his aunt Maria Clemm and her daughter Virginia. In 1834, John Allan died, leaving Poe out of his will, but providing for an illegitimate child Allan had never met. Edgar who continued to struggle living in poverty, got a break when one of his short stories won a contest in the Baltimore Saturday Visiter. In 1835, Edgar landed an editorial position with the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond.Virginia. Virginia who became his literary inspiration, as well as his love interest. The couple married in 1836 when she was only 13 years old. While Edgar worked at the Southern Literary Messenger, Edgar developed a reputation as a cut-throat critic, writing vicious reviews of his contemporaries which earned him the nickname the "Tomahawk Man."
