Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe is a very famous poet that many people know about. He wrote many poems, including ‘The Raven’ and ‘The Bells’, some of his most famous poems. Poe struggled with depression his whole life, and with alcoholism. Some of his poems were very dark and sad, like Poe’s depression. Poe definitely had an impact on American literature. He was one of the first poets to write about horror and detective fiction. Many people call him the "architect" of the modern short story (E.A.P poets.org).

His aunt had a daughter named Virginia, who became an inspiration to Poe in his poems, and later became his love interest (E.A.P Bio.com). In 1835, Poe accepted a job as an editor at the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond, Virginia. This job helped Poe with his financial problems, and he brought his aunt and his cousin that he ended up marrying in 1836. When Poe married his cousin, she was only 13 years old (E.A.P GVRL). Poe tried to write short stories to earn money. His first short stories were in the "Philadelphia Saturday Courier", but he still wasn't making enough money to support himself independently. Poe uses several symbols to escalate the poem and take it to a higher level. Poe uses the word "midnight" in the first verse of 'The Raven', and 'December' in the second verse. The words midnight and December both symbolize an end to something, or a change to something. Midnight in December could be New Year's eve, which is a date that people can symbolize with change.
