One’s emotions exist endlessly throughout their everyday lives. Our emotions comprise so much of who we are as humans. However, these emotions we feel directly affect everything around us, the situations and the people. A part of having emotions is the ability to control them. According to Wood’s (2016) research, emotional intelligence is one’s ability to notice these feelings or emotions and to judge which emotions are suitable, then to communicate these feelings effectively. Emotional intelligence is a way for humans to gauge their emotions and efficiently exchange them with others, in a respectable manner. According to Goleman’s YouTube video, Introducing Emotional Intelligence (2012), there are four domains that emotional intelligence is categorized into. The first domain is “self-awareness”, which is defined as one knowing what they are feeling and why they are feeling this. Goleman suggests this is one’s moral compass. Meaning if someone is self-aware, they will be successful in judging if something is morally right or wrong. Hence, to be a good citizen one needs to be self-aware. The second domain is “self-management”, through all our emotions it is our responsibility to gauge these and to control the negative ones, while also enhancing the positive ones. It is essential to manage your feelings to truly understand other’s feelings. Third Goleman states, empathy. This is one’s ability to know how others are feeling. One cannot be empathetic if they do not manage their own emotions. To show empathy, one needs time to show interest in others around them. Finally, the fourth domain is “skilled relationships”. This final domain is the last piece of emotional intelligence, where one will place all the domains together to be successful. Goleman’s (2008) video on “Good Samaritans”, discusses how the impact of emotional intelligence truly affects the way we view others around us and show empathy towards them. Hence, being emotionally aware of ourselves and those around us, makes us more prone to care about the others that surround us. Goleman (2008) discusses how when people are in a hurry their brains are typically in the wrong place, because we as humans are wired to help others. So, when in a hurry and only concerned about ourselves, we lack the ability to show compassion and empathy to those in need. Gaining emotional intelligence guides one to be aware of their own emotions and empathetic to those around them. All in all, emotional intelligence correlates to being a good Samaritan. In a relationship, how can one “be a good neighbor” or in other words a good Samaritan, if they are always so focused on themselves. As a child we learn that helping others, makes you a good friend or “good neighbor”.
