In the book, The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, the society is utopian for most individuals in the community, but in sense it is dystopian for those very few blessed individuals such as the Giver, and Jonas; the Receiver. The community is controlled under such circumstances that individuals are completely unable to feel any true emotion or pain because of the necessity for sameness. In today's world, most people including myself, take pain for granted without thoroughly looking at the bigger picture. Physical pain is that harsh, dreadful, hurt coming from an injury as simple as a pinprick or a severe as a broken bone. Although physical pain is not the most pleasant, it is treatable with medicine and most of the time, fairly easy to get over. Anytime I see an article about “The boy who cannot feel pain”, for a split second, jealousy pops into my head. I then realize how precocious he and his guardians must be. The causes of emotional pain can range anywhere from being bullied, to having a loved one die. Unlike, physical pain, it is much harder to overcome, but it has more benefits. Emotional pain can help you to understand emotions better by experiencing each of them once and then learning how to cope with each feeling. It also can help with keeping the positive sides of life afloat. A personal experience I have had with emotional pain, is being bullied by friends. As an elementary school student, my friends were jokingly mean to me, just like every friend group, but I took it very seriously. It was tough but I finally got enough courage to tell them to stop. Just like physical pain, emotional pain can lead to health issues such as depression severe enough to need help from support groups such as family, friends, and doctors.
