Jobs in Canada are increasingly being offered on a temporary or contract basis. Employees and contractors who work in these types of roles have specific needs in the workplace that set them apart from permanent workers. To help understand temporary workers’ unique priorities, we asked over 300 employees working in temporary or contract positions what matters most to them. Being Paid Accurately and on Time Payment issues were a top concern among temporary and contract employees. In fact, 80% of respondents stated that being paid accurately and on time was the most important factor for them. This may reflect differences in contract and permanent employee payment processes. Many contract and temporary workers work in professional or managerial positions; roles in the construction, industrial and healthcare sectors are also very common. Across these sectors, 78% or survey respondents prioritized a safe environment as they enter a new workplace. The Application Process The recruitment process came up twice when surveying employees. Of those surveyed, 48% indicated their relationship with a recruiter mattered most to them as a contract/temporary employee. Similarly, the length of time it takes to register mattered most to 32% of respondents. This indicates how important a smooth and efficient recruitment process is to temporary workers, and how the role of the recruiter can have an important and positive impact on the employee experience. Specific Aspects of the Job Itself What also mattered to many employees was the position itself: 55% of employees prioritized the length of the assignment. Additionally, 48% of employees stressed the importance of utilizing all their skills in the temporary role or getting to work with the employer of their choice (40%). These results highlight the importance of contract or temporary work as a way to gain valuable experience and connections, and/or exhibit skills to a new employer to possibly obtain a permanent
