I knew that I wanted to pursue Environmental Policy, Institutions, and Behavior as a major when I started Rutgers as a freshman. Before enrolling I originally thought I wanted to major in Environmental Science, however I discovered that I am more interested in how the environment works in relation to our society and economic and political systems than just the science of it. EPIB gives me a well rounded approach to studying our environment.
The environment and nature have always been a passion of mine. My earliest memories are of me on my grandparent’s farm in Nigeria. My dream is to work in developing nations with a specific focus on countries in Africa. I hope to pursue this field for two reasons. Africa is home to many developing nations and it is important that these countries develop with laws and policies that protect the health of citizens and the environment. We can learn from the mistakes we have made in America and other developed nations to ensure that as these nations develop they do so in a manner that does not put more stress on our planet. Secondly, Africa is at a large disadvantage in terms of current environmental and health regulations. This allows developed countries to exploit the conditions in some African countries. This pattern has been going on since colonization, Africa as a whole (and the countries that were colonized) still bare the scars of colonization. Therefore, along with trying to better the lives of the citizens that live in these countries face many issues of corruption and resource depletion. I hope to be able to tackle some of these large-scale issues after receiving my education. I know that I can only work on a small portion of this, however that work can breed significant
