Dear, Those who can make a change

We have all heard about how women are paid only a percentage of what men are paid. Are you aware that currently females make 80 cents for every dollar a male and that this is that this is considered huge progress. For me huge progress would be if the wage gap was within a few cents or no gap at all. Without actual change from legislatures or employers the current rate from 1960 the gender wage gap is projected to end in 2059. Now that is just ridiculous that we would have to wait 40 years for change to happen by itself instead of actually bringing about change. Firstly the equal pay act should be enforced more rigorously. All these statistics are for men and women working full-time jobs so one could argue that perhaps women are paid less because they perform lower paying jobs. This however is not true as seen this also affect female college graduate who are paid less than male graduates. This creates a system where if both a male and female took on the same amount of debt a female would carry this debt for longer since they are paid less which is yet another reason to fix this problem right away. As we can see in the previous situation it is obvious that the equal pay act is not enough and larger reform is required. These reforms must not only come in the form of laws but reforms from employers who would obey and begin changes to eliminate the gender wage gap. Another useful tool to solving this issue are incentives that would make it beneficial for companies to start paying fairly as well as laws against a company's ability to retaliate against workers that question their wages which would protect individuals who are still not being paid fairly. And finally there is the issue of negotiating higher wages. Typically men try negotiate higher wages more often than women but did you know that of the small percentage of women who do attempt to negotiate they are more often penalized. This is based on 4 studies ran by Linda Babcock where both male and a female were penalized
