J. F Kennedy signed The Equal Pay Act of 1963 making it illegal to pay different salaries for men and women for similar work but the wage gap between genders still exist in our society. Even after fifty four years since the Equal Pay Act was implemented, it is reported that for every dollar man makes women only make 80 cents (Equal Pay and The Wage Gap).Every day we hear new about women being paid less than man be that in Silicon Valley, Hollywood or any other organization. Google is recently being sued by three former female employees for gender pay discrimination. They claim that Google is systematically paying women less than men. Promoting them slowly and denying them opportunities (NPR, 2017). A female lead actor for very popular Netflix’s series House of Cards claimed that she was being paid less than the male lead actor despite being her character being more popular among viewers (CNN, 2017). …show more content…
But women speaking out for their rights and fighting for it is a good sign of improvement.We need more women in higher management level in the workforce who can advocate about equal gender pay, having women in higher position would give other women someone to look up to on this fight against discrimination.
My company does give its employees paid time off for having a child, but it is nowhere near to Yahoo’s eight weeks paid paternity leave. A survey conducted by The Families and Work Institute found out that only 14% of the employees get some kind of paid dad’s time off (2013). Only 14% of the company providing some kind of dad’s paid of time does reflect poorly on our work life balance. I think this issues needs to be looked after closely, and government should come up with a number to provide dad’s with time off rather than letting company make its own
