In my ESL 273 class, I have learned a lot such as organization, analysis, different types of essays, and so on. All of them are helpful for me to write an academic essay and give me a good foundation to next ESL level. Although learning these new techniques was hard, I got a good grade in my essay when I mastered them. During this fall quarter, I found out my advantage in writing, my weakness that I have to overcome, and what I need to improve in ESL 5. My strength in writing is to deliver a strong thesis statement that I learned from ESL 273. Organization is so important that it makes your points understandable to your readers (Boundless). Without organization, authors cannot present their main ideas and make use of their materials. Take my in-class writing assignment #1 as an example, when I was talking about the unsustainable growth in population, I did not make an brief outline to order my paragraphs. This made readers puzzled because I did not explain how humans cause species extinction and what exactly the scientists come up with the problems about GMOs, but directly presented the way farmers tend to use GMOs. However, I did a good job in my in-class writing assignment #3, I wrote down an outline to structure my paragraph. First of all, I delivered a powerful thesis statement about we shouldn’t go back to the past, and then gave three reasons to argue why return to the past has detrimental effects, including the physical effects and mental effects. After that, I explained more about why people will not value time, why they will learn no lessons from their mistakes, and the whole world will be in disorder if people go back in time. In this assignment #3, I organized it step by step, from person to the whole world. Finally, I knew I was writing a common, academic essay with good organization.
